| What Should the Red Sox Rotation Look Like? |

RockOutWithMySoxOut said the following @ 09/03/2009, 2:38pm We're heading towards the "home stretch", and there still seems to be a litany of question marks surrounding the Red Sox rotation... again. So I began to wonder who people thought the best starting 5 is for the remainder of the season and into the playoffs, provided we can hold off the Rangers. I, personally, think that the best combination is still with Lester and Beckett (even with his recent struggles) at the top. Then, Clay Buchholz, who has had a few rocky starts, but has also flashed signs of that untapped potential, especially recently. Inconsistency is obviously an issue, but I think he will improve with each experience. Dice-K will make his return next week (SEP 9th), hopefully rested and with a renewed confidence, but his start tomorrow is one to watch as it should provide a better gage for his status. Lastly, unfortunately, will probably have to be a combination of Wakefield and Byrd. My preference would be Wake, but his health is proving to be a more serious concern that originally anticipated. I feel that Byrd over-achieved just as Penny did when he first started in the rotation, and expectations should be tempered regarding his upcoming scheduled starts. So, in the end, this would be my ideal rotation: Lester, Beckett, Buchholz, Dice-K and Wakefield. Who has a better suggestion? |

b12696 said the following @ 09/04/2009, 7:18pm Right now I think your top starter is Lester, and even though he has struggled lately I would still put Beckett as the #2 guy, with Wakefield coming back tommorow, even with Bucholtz's recent succes he should still be the third starter I believe. Then it's Bucholtz and Bird. But when Dice-K comes back Bird will probably be booted from the rotation barring another injury. He'll have to prove he can perform and work his way up in the rotation. Also in the playoffs Francona likely will not be using 5 starters. So for right now my rotation would be Lester, Beckett, Wakefield, Bucholtz, and Bird. When Dice-K comes back, I'd insert him as the #5 guy and move Bird to the pen for the rest of September. Alos I have to think Beckett will perform better than this so in the playoffs my rotation is Beckett, Lester, Wakefield, and Buckholtz and Matsuzaka will have to battle it out for that 4th spot. |

RockOutWithMySoxOut said the following @ 09/04/2009, 8:39pm So.... Basically you agree with everything I just said in my opening argument??? I'm not sure where the discrepancy is in your rebuttal... Obviously there will not be a 5 man rotation in the playoffs. Right now, I would say Beckett, Lester, and Buchholz as the top 3. And if Dice-K throws well, he could be the number 4 guy, with Wake/Byrd being the odd men out in October, both assuming long relief roles when necessary. Also, if Dice-K struggles, I think Wake would have the edge to remain in the roation over Byrd, as long as he's healthy. Tazawa could also be used a long relief guy to replace Wakefield if he needs to stay in the rotation for the playoffs. Still not sure where you're disagreeing with me on this one... Hopefully you can clarify. |

b12696 said the following @ 09/05/2009, 10:00am What I disagree with mainly is this: I don't think Beckett will continue to struggle like this so I would have him as the #1 starter, not Lester. Also I would rather have Wakefield as the #3 guy not Bucholtz. Wake was a freakin' all star for cryin' out loud. then I'd have Dice-k and Bucholtz battle it out for the #4 spot in the rotation. I have no clue why you would want to put Wake in the 'pen. Also there is the possibility (however slim) that Dice-K can come back and assert himself as the #3 guy like in 07 and 08. But thats not likely so I have him and Bucholtz competing for that October rotation spot in September. |
