| | The ballpark was rocking with elation at the end of the game, but Youkilis cautioned Red Sox Nation not to get too high: “We all have faith in ourselves. It’s good to get a win opening night. It’s good for the city. It’s good for the fans. It’s good for the players. It’s good for everyone… But it’s still just one game.”

| | It was a star-studded Hollywood-esque affair filled with villains (the Yankees) and heroes (the Olde Towne Team) and drama (the pre-game appearance of one-time Red Sox hero, Pedro Martinez). Here are a few of my photos (and a couple of borrowed ones) from Opening Night at Fenway Park.

| | Six months later, the situation was nearly identical.
Top of the ninth inning. Fenway Park. Red Sox leading by two runs. The Dropkick Murphys blaring through the speakers, with “Dirty Water” waiting on deck.
This time, though, Jonathan Papelbon [stats] delivered.

| | What a party it has been this decade for Boston sports fans, what with the Patriots, Red Sox [team stats] and Celtics enjoying so much success that it seemed like one continuous season, the various teams resting only long enough for the occasional Rolling Rally.
But then the lights went on a couple of years ago, right after the Celtics secured banner No. 17. Somebody said, “OK,...

| | Mike Lowell got the longest and loudest ovation of any player on the Red Sox’ 25-man roster during pregame introductions last night.
And Jason Varitek got to catch the “first pitch” of the season from Pedro Martinez.
Barring any hiccups to the Red Sox’ master plan, that may be the most attention and action either veteran gets on a baseball diamond for the next...

| | For Josh Beckett, after waiting for five months to pitch in a meaningful game, it was over all too quickly. He walked off the mound before the fifth inning had ended. Of the 14 outs he registered, just one came by strikeout, the first time since June 14, 2007, that he had struck out so few in a start.
There were Yankee base runners throughout his stay, via eight hits and three walks....

| | Twenty months ago, Kelly was the Red Sox first round pick (30th overall). Baseball people say he fell that low in the draft due to the fact that he had been offered a scholarship to play football (QB) and baseball (SS) at the University of Tennessee, and because they KNEW it would take a king’s ransom to convince Kelly to forego college. The Red Sox determined he was THE BEST high...

| | At one o’clock this morning, the Red Sox announced their 25-man Opening Day roster in an e-mail to the media. Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein made the announcement; but it’s unclear whether he sent the e-mail or whether one of his minions sent it on his behalf.
If you have any doubt as to the reasons this organization is successful, all you need to know...

| | He will continue to learn his craft and hone his hitting skills at Pawtucket (Triple-A) in 2010. He may be the guy who eventually replaces J D Drew in right field, if he isn’t included in a package bound for southern California later this year in exchange for Adrian Gonzalez.
