Schilling: Sox should extend Beckett
E-mail|Link|Comments (39) Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff February 8, 2010 01:15 PM
Curt Schilling fired up his blog again and writes today that the Red Sox should sign Josh Beckett to a contract extension.
His reasoning is that Beckett tries really hard. Just a guess,...

| | When the Red Sox announced that Jacoby Ellsbury would move from center field to left field to make room for Mike Cameron for the upcoming season, there was a tidal wave of interest on Fangraphs.com, a useful and informative Web site that lists exhaustive baseball statistics, including the defensive sort that can't easily be determined.
One statistic - Ultimate Zone Rating in Runs Above...

| In case you were wondering, yes, Curt Schilling reads blogs, too.
That became imminently clear yesterday, when the retired Red Sox great and 38 Pitches blogger fired back at the Boston Globe and one of its best baseball writers, Peter Abraham, after Honest Abe had the temerity to poke fun at a Schilling blog post in which Schill backed the idea of re-signing pitcher Josh Beckett as soon...

Nomar Garciaparra's Career Winding...

| | It's hard to pinpoint exactly when Nomar Garciaparra's career started to unravel.
There was a time, beginning with Nomar's rookie season in 1997 and lasting until about 2002 or maybe '03, that he was the most beloved athlete in Boston -- this generation's Larry Bird or Bobby Orr. You'd ask Ted Williams, and he'd tell you Nomar was the greatest Red Sox player since ... well, him....

| I'm rooting for Josh Reddick to find a meaningful spot with the Red Sox in the next season or two, and in the spirit of forthrightness, there will be no attempt to suppress my subjectivity regarding the 23-year-old outfielder today or in the immediate future.
My reasons for rooting for Reddick are both visceral and personal. He has a throwing arm that makes even daring baserunners...

Josh Beckett's Contract Talks a Game...

| | "For years," wrote Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe on Sunday, "teams have gotten burned by pitchers breaking down after getting a boatload of money and a long-term deal." Consider your Mike Hamptons, Barry Zitos, Jason Schmidts and Kei Igawas of the world.
It's clear that kind of contract is not going to fly for the Red Sox anymore. Not even in the case of Josh...

2011 free agency a lost year
|

smokeyboy found this 1 day ago on www.bostonherald.com
| | So much for waiting until next year - in free agency, that is.
A 2011 class once expected to be flush with top-tier talent is now looking more like a repeat of this past winter, when the trio of Jason Bay, John Lackey and Matt Holliday cashed in, but most every other free agent ended up scrounging.
The presumed ace of next year’s pitching market, Roy Halladay, signed a...

Will The Red Sox Be Better In 2010?...

| | The front office has completed the re-shaping the club, at least for now. With the possible exception of one reliever, the team that will report to Fort Myers seems destined to be the team that takes the field on Opening Day. It will be quite different than most teams the Sox have fielded in recent years… shorter in offensive firepower and longer on pitching and defense.
The great...

Lowrie Needs To Work His Way Back...

| | Jed Lowrie was supposed to be the Red Sox' shortstop of the future. Now it's unclear if he even has a future in Boston.
After the 2008 season, it looked like Lowrie was well on his way to being the long-term answer at shortstop, something the Red Sox haven't had since Nomar Garciaparra was traded in 2004. Lowrie hit .258 with two home runs and 46 RBIs in 260 at-bats and played...

Sox Need To Ante Up for Beckett

Red Sox pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers, Fla., two weeks from today. It could be the last time that Josh Beckett shows up to spring training as a member of the Red Sox.
Beckett is entering the final year of his contract, slated to make $12.1 million this season, and along with Mariners lefthander Cliff Lee would be the most sought after starting arm in the free agent class...
