In Fort Myers, John Lackey made his first appearance for the Red Sox, pitching two perfect innings in the club’s 9-3 triumph over the Minnesota Twins. He retired the side in order in each of the first two innings, throwing just 20 pitches. He struck out one.
In Port Charlotte, Florida, the Tampa Bay Rays scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Red Sox, 6-4. Felix Doubront pitched the first two innings, shutting down the Rays on one walk while striking out three batters.
