On June 22, 2002, the St. Louis Cardinals were warming up for a game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago when it became obvious that pitcher Darryl Kile wasn’t going to make it in time. A call was placed to the team hotel and a member of the staff checked his room. He had died of a heart attack.
“That’s a pretty tough situation,” said J.D. Drew, the Red Sox right fielder who was a member of the Cardinals at the time, “to have to go back and start playing baseball without one of your key contributors, one of your leaders in the clubhouse.”
