While the bulk of Red Sox Nation (and every manager with a date with the boys from Boston in the near future) talk endlessly of Becketts resurgence of power, the return of confidence to Jon Lester, Dice-K's horrible season, Pennys slightly better than averageness (I know its not a word but it rolls of the tongue just great) and the return of John Smoltz, another man continues to take the mound and quietly goes about his business. On one hand what can be said about Tim Wakefield that hasnt been said in any of his previous years with the Sox? Not alot. However this year Wake has found him self quietly moving up the stat chart to be equal first for wins in the entire Major League for 2009. He shares this top spot with Messrs Halladay and Slowey. With 10 wins a piece Halladay edges ahead with a better ERA, more strikeouts, less walks, and a shutout. However Wake beats Slowey with his ERA, his 2 complete games, his hits and homeruns allowed. As voting for the All-Star team comes to a close we can see some definate favourites showing. Longoria, Jeter and Mauer are clear favourites for their positions, as is Jason Bay for an outfield position. However the rest of the roster spots are close enough that votes can still change the outcome, Pedroia and Youkilis are inside 60k votes of getting the lead (so keep voting Sox fans!) The really big question though is who will be handed the ball to start for the American League? Obviously there are crowd favourites, the respectable aces of each team. Halladay, Slowey, Beckett. But what about Wake? As the current Red Sox wins leader and the only pitcher in the rotation to have been reasonably solid all season I say we give it to Wake. So the Knuckleball is a little iffy on some days. So he tends to hit batters a bit. At the end of the day the All Star game is a bit of a circus, and really what difference does it make where the World Series is opened? As I don't need to tell you, both of the Sox last 2 World Series were won on the road anyway! So there it is, give the ball to Wake, he's been going strong all year and is well on the way to putting up on of the best seasons of his career. VOTE 1 - TIM WAKEFIELD FOR AMERICAN LEAGUE ALL-STAR STARTING PITCHER 2009!!!
