Buzzworthy - Feature It!
MarylandBeingMaryland wrote this 2 years agoPermalink

So, reading the Sporting News for the week of July 6, 2009.  Little 2-page feature on Fenway.

Anyway, in discussing the "Ted Williams Seat" (Section 42, Row 37, Seat 21) -- You know, the "Red Seat"  -- Youk says, and I quote:

"There's no way that's true.  I don't think any guy can hit it that far.  If anyone could, it'd be a great story because it's Ted Williams, one of the greatest hitters of all time.  But there's no way a ball could go that far, in the air.  if it hopped up the seats, maybe, I don't know.  That's gotta be close to 600 feet out there.  But it's a good myth."

Youk -- A "myth"?  So it ain't so....

I dunno, maybe, maybe not.  As many know, the ball was reputed to have landed 502 feet from home plate.

I guess the point of this blog entry is that I haven't heard a peep about Youk's somewhat "doubtful/dubious" comments regarding one of  the most famous events in Red Sox's history.  Just wondering if anyone had.

maybe he should be concerned with his own batting numbers and not try to taint the legacy and glowing aura of Ted Williams - red seat 502 included. And did they use performance enhancing drugs back in the 1920s as well? Hitting .406 must have been phony as well

hmmm...this piqued my curiosity and I found a couple interesting articles on measuring the distances of the long ball. http://www.ask.com/bar?q=Home+run+measurements&page=1&qsrc=2417&ab=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slate.com%2Fid%2F2095%2F Another very intersting article is from the trusted Baseball Almanac http://www.baseball-almanac.com/feats/art_hr.shtml And if it's guys estimating the length of the long ball...there COULD be some slight exaggerations going on! (Lighten up -it's a joke)
