Many Sawxheads members of course are fathers. Procreation and all that….
So, what does Father’s Day mean to you?
To me, it is by far the coolest thing ever. I mean, what could be better than, at least in my case, a little boy (3 year old) saying "Daddy" to me?
The sheer joy of hearing that single word, the looks you receive, the overwhelming feeling that flows throughout your entire body. All because of a SINGLE word.
For me, I recall first wanting to have a child, and, I’ll be honest, a BOY, since I was about 10 years old. Weird? Maybe, but that’s just how it is.
Waiting a good long time to get married, and then, sitting in the doctor’s office for the sonogram and being told – "It’s a boy." Wow. Yes, tears were involved. Sure, hearing "It’s a girl" would have been great as well, but, in all candor, I so wanted a boy.
My Mom, already the mother of three boys, the grandmother of four GIRLS, and, at the time, great-grandmother of one great-grandDAUGHTER, got a phone call from me later that same day. Went something like this: "So, Mom, what do you want, a boy or a girl?" Never one to be too bashful about her comments, she quickly said "I WANT A BOY!!" Well, I told her "YOU GOT IT!!" More tears.
Anyway, today, as we do what we do for Father’s Day, be it work or play, and, hopefully, for some of us, catching all or part of this afternoon’s matinee at Fenway, let all us Dad’s take a minute or two and reflect upon how so awesome it is to be a Dad. I’m sure I will, and hope all you Dad’s do as well.
