Okay, I know things are looking really bad right about now. Our beloved Sox just got their a$$es handed to them... by our arch nemesis none the less. Prior to that, the Rays put a beat down on us, and looking ahead we have the Tigers and Rangers on the horizon, not to mention another series with the Bronx Bastards in a week and half.
Our boys are beat up, embarrassed and free falling in the standings. No one in Red Sox Nation is happy about that. But I submit to you there is one good thing that will come from it... a return of our identity!
I know, it sounds crazy, but just hear me out. For years our nation was devoted to a ragtag bunch of loveable losers. Our Sox would get close, but inevitably fall short... the Curse of the Bambino, they would say! But our suffering gave us a common bond, and our determination in the face of insurmountable odds endeared us to the rest of the world. If nothing else, they respected us for never giving up or losing faith.
And then one day... finally... our suffering stopped. We got over on the “better than thou” Yankees and won it all. Then we did it again a couple years later! For the first time in a long time, we were flying in first class.
But an interesting thing happened along the way. All that good will we accumulated from other sports fans of the world… well, it vanished as our hardware piled up. Eventually, to those outside of New England, the Sox replaced the Yankees as the team people loved to hate!
Truthfully, I don't really care too much what other people think. But I also don't believe it's healthy for the overall psyche of the fans, or the team, to be the despised ones in baseball. And that’s the silver lining in our fall from the top. Sure, we're feeling a little humbled right now, but that's going to be to our advantage. Because now we're the underdogs again... and everyone loves an underdog. Especially when they pull off the upset!
Go Sox!
