Hello Red Sox fans!
I haven't posted in a long, long time! I have been lurking and reading other people's blogs. I have been very involved in trying to keep my "day" job, hoping I'm not getting ready to join the ranks of the unemployed again. It would not be a good thing at my age to lose my job like I did in 2007.
I don't "do" football, so I have been anxiously waiting for pitchers and catchers to come, and it's here now. My long sports hibernation is over! I am excited about our 2011 season. I am also keeping my eye on Casper Wells, Detroit outfielder, a young man from Schenectady. who played Little League ball with my son many years ago. Cap was a couple of years younger than my son--a hard worker, nice kid. I am cheering for him, hoping he stays in the show. He deserves to make it big. I used to announced the Little League games when my son played, and I remember Cap when he wore a little grey uniform (his team was the best in the league) and his glove was almost as big as he was. His parents are so proud of him, as they should be. A very special young man. I know he's not in a Sox uniform, but I'm still rooting for him!
I am still trying to fulfill what is the last thing on my "bucket list," and that is to sing the National Anthem at Fenway. My friend David Roth, who's a wonderful singer from Orleans on Cape Cod, was invited by someone from the Red Sox to sing the Anthem sometime during the 2011 season. I am so jealous! I sing it at the minor league park here in upstate New York and have submitted my recording several times to the Sox, but no go. Dr. Steinberg was supposed to help me before he left for the Dodgers. I guess I'm relegated to single-A ball...(I don't try to turn the song into a rhythm-and-blues song--maybe because I sing it on pitch--unlike Christina Aguilera, I remember the words AND the tune!)
So those are a few ruminations as I just finished my Saturday night radio show. I am heading off to Memphis for a folk music convention next week. Rumor has it that it will be 60-65 degrees in Memphis. Can't wait!!!

Fenway Once Again

Fenway on Friday...Manny's return...I saw many people wearing Dodger blue and white, numbers and names from the past and present--Gibson, Koufax, Ethier, Ramirez--and even the flag from the Dominican Republic. What a wonderful melting pot in Fenway Park!
When I started going to Fenway in the 1960s, often there were fewer than 5,000 in the entire park. When the organist (Mr. Kiley) played the organ, the notes echoed off the stands. Not so these days. I have trouble getting tickets. Last night I was in the next-to-last row in the right-field grandstand. No matter, though. It was FENWAY PARK!
For those of you lucky enough to live in Boston, treasure what you have. I have memories of having been a fortunate teenager who was blessed with baseball galore at Fenway in the 1960s and '70s. Now I live 200 miles away and have to subscribe to MLB TV and MLB.com (thank goodness they exist!). But nothing--nothing--beats the feeling that I had last night at Fenway Park.
I may live in upstate New York, but my heart is still there every summer, with the boys of summer, with the crowds singing "Sweet Caroline," with the vendors tossing their wares to the people in the stands. This team has been my team, win or lose, for more than half of a century.
I love being a Sawxhead!

Don't you love the virtual waiting room?

I just don't know what else to do about trying to get tickets. I have been a die-hard fan of this team since 1956, and all I wanted was a couple of tickets to a couple of Sunday games. I work every Saturday night and Monday through Friday. I sat in the bloomin' virtual waiting room from 10 AM until I had to go to my radio station job at 5 pm. What did I get? Nada. Bupkis. Nothing. I got a computer that "refreshed" ever 15 seconds, but no "opportunities" to buy any tickets. But I am SURE that some big ticket brokers somewhere got mucho tickets and they'll want mucho of my dinero to buy some.
I live about three-and-a-half hours away from Fenway. All I want is one or two games every season. Is that too much to ask?
But over here, to my right, as I type, is "Get your Red Sox tickets!" on Stub Hub. I'm sure if I were to offer my first-born son and his first-born son, I could score some tickets from them, huh?

My first grandchild, William Thomas Owin Fischer (to be called Liam), was born on the fifth anniversary of the Red Sox 2004 World Series win! October 27, 2009, at Lowell General Hospital in Massachusetts! He has Sawheads genes--from me, from his dad, his aunt, and his mother "married into it"!!!

Hall of Fame induction

I had the opportunity to go to the Hall of Fame induction today. It was great, even though I didn't have the chance to get close to Jim Rice. I have been to Cooperstown a number of times, since I live about an hour and a half away, but today was special for me. I had the chance to meet one of my heroes from the 1960s--and it wasn't a Red Sox player. It was Harman Killebrew, and I have admired him for many, many years for his kindness to the community and for an incident at Fenway where he spoke to a young boy (about eight years old, I'd say--I was about 15), when he came over and spoke to him. The boy told Mr. Killebrew that he was striking out all the time when he was playing Little League. Mr. Killebrew asked him to show him his batting stance, and the little boy did. Mr. Killebrew noticed that he was standing kind of pidgeon-toed--with his toes pointing into one another. He suggested that the boy open up his stance. I have remembered that for more than 45 years. I was so excited to speak to him and reminisce about that day.
It was also wonderful to see Yaz, Sandy Koufax, Al Kaline, and Hank Aaron. There is a recent song about Hank Aaron called ".715" by a Nashville songwriter named Peter Cooper. I hope that one day Mr. Aaron gets to hear the song.
And Jim Ed himself...How wonderful is he??? What I remember most about his playing days was the sound of that he bat made when he connected with the ball. Even if you were listening on the radio, you could tell if it was going out of the park. What an amazing ballplayer! How fortunate are we, as Red Sox fans, to have been blessed with the presence of Jim Ed Rice on our team???
