We ain't buyin'.....
Over the last few days we have been bombarded by the media regarding "this was said and that was said" about this years dismal season and the supposed reasons why. Management says they stand behind Bobby V and he will finish the season, the team isn't looking to remove him, the team has had meetings over the last 10 years, this is nothing new they say. Larry Luchino says the owners are just as committed today as they always have been.
I think we would all have a fantastic garden if we could spread a little of this over the soil. When serving up a slice of blame pie, everyone associated gets a big fat piece. The team hasn't played to the potential it should be, given the high paid talent on the field. Bobby V didn't exactly whip this clubhouse into shape as we thought he might do. (notice I said might) and ownership is sitting on its collective asses as they did last year as the team had one of the worse collapses in baseball history.
Only a handful of players actually look like they are remorseful about last September and are giving their best efforts to turn things around. Sadly, if not everyone is on the same page, those efforts can be wasted.
Why don't the owners stroll into the clubhouse and start reading the riot act? They are paying a huge salary to players, to be champion caliber players that fill Fenway every game. I believe if this team doesn't improve, you will see more empty seats like you do in other markets. Then will ownership pay attention, if it affects them financially? How about giving a good product for the money that the average Joe pays to bring his family to Fenway? For tickets and then to feed that family is ridiculous and a lot to ask when you know that only part of the team cares that they are disappointing you, the fan.
If I am writing a fat check to you as a player, then I'd say I have a right to go into the clubhouse and ask what the hell is going on, and demand answers. I am not your friend, I am the boss and it should be my way or the highway as they say.
With long and expensive contracts, there isn't much you can do to a player financially since they are guaranteed the money. How about stopping that stupid practice and start adding more incentive programs into MLB contracts. So many wins, you get more, so many homers, stolen bases, RBI's you get more.
Perhaps demoting a player can be just humiliating enough to send a message and maybe they just might take notice. Send Beckett to the bullpen or down to Triple A to figure it out. Give some Triple A guys a chance to come up and show what they have, make the starters earn that coveted daily position.
Whatever it is , something needs to be done in a drastic fashion. As we go into the series tonight with the Yankees, I am not feeling any confidence what so ever. I almost feel bad, like sending in a little league team to play and you know they are going to get killed. You want to cover your eyes, but you can't help but watch the train wreck unfold.
I support the Red Sox as I always have, and since I have for so many years I think I have earned the right to be disgruntled. I don't expect to win a World Series every year, I just want a team that I can bring my son to see and have him smile as we leave after a good game, by a team he can admire.
