Wow, 100 years. I am so grateful that Fenway was never torn down in favor of a new stadium.
When ever I go, I like to envision the ghosts of players past in their respectful positions on the field. Evans masterfully roaming right field, Yaz in left, Dom DiMaggio,"the little professor" and his 34 game hitting streak which is still the record for longest hitting streak in Red Sox history, Dave Roberts and his historic steal of second base, Crazy Jimmy Piersall and Tony C trying to make a comeback after suffering damage to his eye being hit by a pitch. So many memories and the list just goes on and on.
One of the best and most important moments in my life was in 2004 and the end of the curse of the Bambino, with an exciting World Series win! Another great moment at least to me, was in 2008 when Bill Buckner returned to Fenway and threw out the first pitch. Bill was a heck of a player as any good Red Sox fan knows and it was a travesty the way he and his family were treated.
So a big celebration is on for today with faces from the past coming to pay tribute to one of the best ball parks in the country. I am glad Terry Francona decided to return. I believe he got shafted and I probably would still be a bit pissed off, but he was part of two World Series wins and is an important part of this park and it's 100 years. I believe he should come and let the fans know he appreciates OUR support even though he may not have gotten it from some players or management.
It is unfortunate that the team has such a poor record to start the season, not much to celebrate there. If they can be inspired by seeing so many great people who have played there before and win, it will truly be a great day at the ball park.
Happy 100th Fenway, I look forward to the day I bring my son there the first time and share what we have all loved for so many years.
