As I listen to sports radio continue to rehash the events that took place in the loss by the Patriots, I think of 2 things. It's over, and all the speculation is just that, no change of the outcome. They lost. Secondly, it appears that many are piling on Wes Welker as the scapegoat of this loss.
Welker is one of my favorites, actually my favorite since Bruschi left. He has an excellent work ethic and he has, most importantly to me, heart, soul and integrity. On almost every occasion he makes that catch. This time he didn't, but there were many other problems that occurred that blame can't be assigned to any single individual. If you want to you can start with Brady. The intentional grounding that led to the safety screwed them from the start. Without it, the game is 19-17 and the Pats can win by one with a field goal instead of being forced to get a TD.
Welker is one of the reasons this team got to the Superbowl in the first place. So in closing, I am hoping that Welker doesn't become a scapegoat like Bill Buckner, who was one of the finest players to wear the Red Sox uniform, Check his career stats. Welker is one of the finest to wear a Patriots uniform as well. I'm sure no one can possibly be as hard on him as he is to himself right now.
