Now I am not a fan of inter-league play, lets get that out in the open right off the bat, but since MLB wants it around to pad the bank so be it. Now on to the topic, I don't get this issue stemming from the recent injury to Toronto CP Scott Downs and the injury to Wang last season. I read in Friday's edition of the USA Today that Toronto's skipper Cito Gaston advised his pitchers "no swinging" after Downs was injured and he later said that "in inter-league play use the DH. Otherwise, forget it." Okay so I have 2 things wrong with this situation...
1) Downs was injured while running to first base, he sprained his toe. HIS TOE, maybe you should have athletes that know how to run. Pitchers run the MOST out of any player on a baseball team, or they are supposed to at least.
2) The manager is blaming inter-league play for his own bone head decision for putting his CP in, in the 8th inning, knowing he would have to bat in the top half of the 9th. No one made him leave his CP in to hit, but someone else must be to blame for him getting injured, right...?
So last season Steini-whiny said, "I think it is time the National League joined the 21st century," after losing Wang in a base running incident and went on to say, "don't give me that traditionalist crap." So can someone tell me why NL pitchers can be conditioned to run the bases and AL pitchers can't?
AL teams carry an extra starter (DH) where as NL teams use that spot for a pinch hitter or an extra relief pitcher because of late inning incidents, such as an 8th inning guy (so your closer doesnt have to hit). So because certain teams do not make their pitchers condition their bodies we should significantly sway the home field advantage to accommodate THE AL TEAM in NL parks, that makes sense to me...anyone else?
(I really love how this comes out a week after Becks goes yaya off Brett Myers)
