It is with great regret that McGreevy's passes on this announcement to all Red Sox fans. 98 year old, Katherine "Kitty" Dooley, daughter of Royal Rooter co-founder John S. Dooley and sister of "The Queen of Fenway Park" Elizabeth "Lib" Dooley , died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Milton on Father's day. She was a great friend to McGreevy's and an important link bridging a long gone era of Boston Sports history with a new era of modern day Red Sox fans.
She remembered the Sox winning it all in 1918 and after the World Series in 2004 she asked Sox management if she could put her sister Lib's famous Fenway seat in her own living room. The Sox honored her wish and for the past 5 years, 4th and 5th generation "Rooters" in the Dooley clan got to sit in the seat that her sister Lib watched over 4,000 Fenway games in. She appeared in the film Rooters:Birth of Red Sox Nation and was honored at Fenway on the last day of the season in 2007 when she threw out a ceremonial first pitch with Tom Fitzgerald, the grandson of Royal Rooter "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald. Over the years she befriended Boston Hall of Famers like Hugh Duffy, Rabbit Maranville and Ted Williams. She was a great fan of the game in a family with a special connection to the game.
Kitty made it into McGreevy's this past year for lunch and it was a special event to have the daughter of Nuf Ced's old pal Jack Dooley back in the reconstituted stomping grounds of the original 3rd Base Saloon. We'll miss bringing her take out lunches to Milton and we will miss her stories about how Hugh Duffy hit .438 in 1894. She will truly be missed. Her wake is in Dorchester at the Dolan Funeral Home , 1140 Washington St. Wed. 4-8pm. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Irish Pastoral Center 953 Hancock St, Quincy MA.
