I don't know about you, but I'm more than a little disheartened by the votes Manny and A-Rod are getting in the All-Star vote. It seems hundreds of thousands of the fans are turning a blind eye to admitted steroid users as well. Another slap on the wrist, we just wanna win mentality. This was a great chance for the fans to take a stand against steroids. What the hell is going on!? Manny is currently in fourth among outfielders in the National League, A-Rod third among third basemen in the American League. Curt Schilling was asked on his live chat what he thought of the fact that Manny and A-Rod are doing so well in the All-Star voting. His answer...
"It's an embarrassing testament to society and what we say, and what we do, are two very different things."
I was hoping to see the fans take a stance against steroids in the All Star voting. Looks like it ain't happening. Just wondering what everybody else's thoughts are on the subject.
No MLB does not care what we think-That's my point! Using our votes as fans to keep a Manny, and or A-Rod out of the AllStar game was the ONE way we could excercise some control over the whole stinking steroid mess. Yet hundreds of thousands of fans chose to use their vote to get them in!

You guys really think that the MLB cares that much about what fans think...they want the popular players in the all star game, THAT is why fans vote, so they can sell all star jerseys. If it was really based on performance players and coaches would have the overall say NOT the fans. I feel that the problem needs to be fixed from the top down. They NEED to oust Selig like he ousted Vincent but the problem is the owners have all the power and, well, hes one of them. I dont see how congress can step in and hold all these congressional hearings regarding players using but they wont hold the league office responsible AT ALL. I also think that the AL and NL President roles need to be brought back and possibly take over the commisioners position. With all the exansion the leagues have gone through it does no kind of justice to the league to have one person in charge of everything, especially when that person is controlled by the owners. "Did you know that the American League and National League presidents positions were removed by Commissioner Bug Selig in 1999 to "unify the leagues"?" To unify the leagues or to get rid of people that might object to him destrying baseball...? You decide... ...View More...View Less
Comparing greenies to PED's is a bit over simplistic. The majority of the research on amphetamine use and sports performance shows that taking amphetamines prior to an event has no benefit. It simply makes an athlete feel they are performing better, but in fact they often perform at a lower level than without the drug. Swallowing a greenie doesn't make you throw harder, hit a ball farther, stay healthier longer, extend your career, increase your damn head size! Anyhow, that really isn't the point of the blog. As fans- we really don't have much input as to what goes on in the MLB. Using our vote to keep certain players out of the All-Star game was one way we as fans could've voiced our disdain and taken a stand against the users. ...View More...View Less
tHERE HAS BEEN DRUGS IN BASEBALL ONE KIND OR ANOTHER FOR DECADES. DON'T FOOL YOURSELVES. GREENIES WERE THERE FOR MANY YEARS AND YES THEY WERE USED TO ENHANCE PERFORMANCE SO DO NOT FOOL YOURSELF THINKING TED AND EVANS AND THE OLD GUYS DIDN'T DO SOMETHING TO ENHANCE THEIR PERFORMANCES IT JUST WAS NOT AS ADVANCED AS THEY DO NOW.

Yup... Selig and his $$$ Ass grabbing ca-hoonies are the front line of turned heads BUT the clueless "fans" who piss and moan and tit for tat OH NO not in my Ball Park .. NOT "My" Team are just as much to blame as well.

I agree, Jude. Why should a player that cheated to excel in the game get the same consideration that a hard working player does. They are 2 different people. problem is you have fans like us, who like the pure sport of baseball and the players of the past who excelled on their own merits and hard work, and the business fans who look purely at the numbers and wins only. With the steroid use the integrity of the game has been compromised and it would send a message if those that cheated were excluded from the voting and or all-star game. There are plenty of other players to take their places that could help either side win the coveted home field advantage. ...View More...View Less
the commish can say he can't play.he said on a radio show in phoenix.but he will probably go with the fans vote....its sucks though that this game determines homefield advantage...

II don't know if any one else has read about the "Vote For Manny" website created to illustrate the joke that the voting, the "this time it counts"/World Series home field advantage rule, the mandatory representation, the still-soft PED rules...has become.

"To me, I think the significance of the All-Star Game is to reward players who have a good first half,†Torre said." Apparently Manny's suspension for testing positive for a banned substance has nothing to do with his feelings.

Yes, I am sure that some care...but I think (maybe I am wrong) that they are not voting for them, not because of the PED situation, but more because of the missed time and that there are other players that have better stats right now.
05/29/2009 2:20 PM
But that is the thing...the fans don't REALLY care. This whole PED thing gives people something to b*tch about. Honestly, I do feel for the guys that are trying to do this naturally and not "juice" but what do I really care if a guy wants to ruin his body (and potentially his life) by doing something stupid? And, as unfortunate as it is, once you get to a certain level of play (I would say that it starts as early as high chool for quite a few), it is all about winning... ...View More...View Less
Oh I understand WHY their voting for them. This was a chance for the fans to send a strong message to the players and MLB in general. Winning at all costs?? I just think its a sad, sad commentary.

People want to win..plain and simple. The All Star game gives your league home field advantage in the world series, and that means a lot. Hell, I would vote for Manny if I was a Dodgers fan, just to give the NL a better chance. He did the crime, he is doing his time, and he will have been reinstated by the game, so why not? There are most definitely guys that haven't been caught that will be in that game as well...The fact of the matter is that we don't know who has been on steroids in the past (christ, we don't really know who is on them NOW)...mandatory testing, grandfather everything to this point, label it the "steroid era" (much like the "dead ball era) and MOVE ON. ...View More...View Less
I think Bud was *hoping* out of sight out of mind. I know it's hard to not take into consideration a players career stats(etc) BUT it is about the current year & Manny is sitting on his butt. Seems like there should be a rule on this sort of thing.
