1903: Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds host Game 3 of the World Series is played in front of 18,801 fans. With Deacon Phillippe pitching one day’s rest the Pirates take the game 4 – 2, to lead the Series 2 games to 1. Jimmy Collins has half of Boston’s hits with a single and double. There are seven ground rule doubles in the game.
1907: Ending their 16 game losing streak, Boston edges past the Browns 1 – 0 with Cy Morgan getting the win.
1912: The Red Sox steamroll the Athletics 17 – 5 in Philadelphia with Joe Wood cruising to his 34th win of the season. Duffy Lewis has a grand slam in today’s game.
1914: Starter Ernie Shore gives up an unearned run to the Yankees in the first inning and would leave the game in the seventh inning with a 1 – 0 New York lead. Both teams would score two runs in the ninth inning for a final score of 3 – 2.
1917: After six losses to Babe Ruth, including three by a score of 1 – 0, Walter Johnson finally slays the dragon with a 6 – 0 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
1936: Former Red Sox pitcher John Alexander “Jack” Lamabe (1963 – 1965) is born in Farmingdale, New York.
1948: On the last day of the regular season the Red Sox double up the Yankees 10 – 5. Both Vern Stephens and Dom DiMaggio have home runs off reliever Vic Raschi.
1954: Former Red Sox pitcher (1978 – 1984, 1998) Dennis Lee Eckersley is born in Oakland, California.
1965: In today’s 11 – 5 win over the Red Sox, the Yankees, Tony Kubek is three for four including a ninth inning home run of Dick Radatz in his last Major League at bat. During the off season doctors find that the 29 year old has three crushed vertebrae, the result of a childhood football injury. Kubek retires rather then risk further injury. The Red Sox finish the season in ninth place.
1968: Former Red Sox James Edward Byrd (1993) is born in Wewahitchka, Florida. He was used a pinch runner twice once of Andre Dawson (May 31st) and Ernest Riles (June 1st).
1971: Former Red Sox infielder (1996 – 1997) Wilfredo Cordero Nieva is born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
1975: Former Red Sox relief pitcher (1995) Scott Robert Cassidy is born in Syracuse, New York.
1990: With a 3 – 1 win over the White Sox, on the last day of the season, the Red Sox secures their third American League East title in the past five years. Tom Brunansky ends the game with a spectacular sliding catch in the right field corner.
1995: Former Red Sox catcher Tony Peña hits a home run in the 13th inning to give Cleveland a 5 to 4 win. Giving the Indians a 1 to 0 series lead.
1998: The Indians double up the Red Sox by a score of 2 – 1 win the American League Divisional Series three games to won. Boston’s lone run was a fourth inning home run of the bat of Nomar Garciaparra.
2007: Josh Beckett retires 19 consecutive batters extending his scoreless innings streak to 18 innings, in route to a 4 – 0 complete game shut out of the Los Angles Angels of Anaheim. Beckett’s three post season shut outs ties Whitey Ford and Mordecai “Three Fingers” Brown for second place all time, and one behind Christy Mathewson. Both Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz homer in tonight’s game.
2008: JD Drew two run homerun in the top of the ninth breaking a 5 – 5 tie to give the Red Sox the win. Tonight’s win breaks a Major League record for the most consecutive wins in a row in the post season over on team. The Sox take 2 – 0 lead in the American League Divisional Series.
