October 1

1903: The first ever World Series Game, also called the “Championship of the United States”, is played in the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds. Deacon Phillippe of the Pirates beats the Cy Young 7 – 3. Jimmy Sebring hits the first home run of the Fall Classic.   1910: In his first Major League start, Lefty Russell shuts out the Red Sox 3 – 0. This is Philadelphia’s 100 win of the season, but would be the only Major League victory of his career.     1914: Police in Portland, Oregon issue a warrant for the arrest of Frank Arellanes for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.     1927: The A’s sweep the Red Sox 10 – 3 and 3 – 2 with Al Simmons going four for five in the opener and 1 for 2 in the nitecap. The Red Sox finish the year in eighth place.   1933: A 38 year old Babe Ruth takes the mound for the last time in his Hall of Fame Career today as he battles he old team the Boston Red Sox in the Bronx. The “Sultan of Swat” gives up 12 hits and 5 earned runs, but New York outlast Boston 6 – 5. His start today is a ploy to drive attendance in today’s meaningless game. Ruth final record as a pitcher is 94 – 46. Boston finishes the season in seventh place.     1938: Jimmie Foxx hits two runs, a three run homer and a grand slam, to finish the season with a then club record 50 homers in a 9 – 2 win over the Yankees.     1944: The White Sox and Red Sox sprint through a double header finishing both games in a total of two hours and 48 minutes. In the lid lifter Rex Cecil out dueling Chicago’s Joe Haynes for a 3 – 1 win, with both teams collecting five hits. Then in game two, completed in hour and ten minutes, the Chi Sox have 11 hits off Johnny Humphries but still lose 4 – 1 to the fourth place Red Sox.     1946: While waiting for the National League pennant to be decided, the Red Sox battle a team of American League All Stars. In the fifth inning the Senators’ (Twins) Mickey Haefner accidently hits Ted Williams on the right elbow with a pitch. This will affect the play of Williams in the World Series.       1949: Needing to win just one out of the final two games against the Yankees to clinch the American League pennant. The Yankees would rally from a 4 – 0 deficit with Joe DiMaggio scoring the New York’s first run of the day followed by a home run by Johnny Lindell to give the Bombers a 5 – 4 win. The two rivals are now tied atop the American League totem pole.     1950: Ted Williams has four hits leading the Red Sox to a 7 – 3 win over the World Series bound Yankees. Williams has three RBIs to finish the season with 97 in only 89 games, helping the Red Sox to a third place finish Many of the Yankees regulars sat out the game to rest up and get ready for the Fall Classic.     1955: Former Red Sox pitcher Jeffery James Reardon is born in Dalton, Massachusetts.     1960: Winning their 14th game in a row, the Yankees beat the Red Sox 3 – 1. Coming in to relieve starter Bill Stafford, Tracy Stallard strikes out Roger Maris, but one year from today Maris will have the last laugh.     1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run of the season off rookie pitcher Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox to pass Babe Ruth’s 34 year old record for home runs in a single season.  The Yankees win the game 1 – 0. The Red Sox finish in sixith place.     1967: On the last day of the season, the Fenway Faithful watches as Carl Yastrzemski collects four hits to lead Boston to a 5 – 3 and clinch the American League pennant. Yaz’s streak of ten hits in his last 13 at bats gives him the AL triple crown (.326, 44 home runs, 121 hits).     1973: Darrell Johnson is officially signed to manage the Red Sox for the 1974 season.   1977: With the Red Sox 8 – 7 loss to the Orioles, the Yankees win the American League East title, with Boston finishing in third place.     1978: The Indians beat the Yankees 9 – 2 on the last day of the season to force a one game playoff at Fenway for the American League East crown. Mean while in Boston the Sox shut the Jays 5 – 0, it is the eighth in the row over Toronto.     1980: Under pressure from the media and the fans, the Red Sox fire Manager Don Zimmer. Johnny Pesky will take over for the final five games, with a 1 – 4 record.     1983: After playing 3,308 Major League games Carl Yastrzemski calls it a career. In a emotional pregame ceremony Yaz runs across the field, shaking hands with fans as he circled Fenway. A 3 – 1 win over the ends his career on a high note. Boston finishes the season in sixith place.     1988: Jeff Sellers pitches a no hitter for seven and one third innings before Luis Medina homers giving the Indians a 1 – 0 win.     1991: Detroit out hits the Red Sox at FenwayPark to win 8 – 5. Wade Boggs has a pair of double reach the 40 plateau for the seventh straight year, the only other player to do this in Major League history is Joe Medwick.     1995: Tony Conigliaro, Dom DiMaggio, Frank Malzone, Johnny Pesky, Jim Rice, Smoky Joe Wood, Jean R. Yawkey, Joe Cronin, Babe Ruth, Bobby Doerr Carl Yastrzemski and Ted Williams are in the inaugural class inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.     2003: Boston would jump out to an early 1 – 0 lead after the first inning, but the A’s would score three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3 – 1 lead. The Red Sox would push across a run in the fifth as well as two more in the seventh inning to take a 4 – 3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, with most of the runs coming off home runs (two by Todd Walker and one by Jason Varitek).  Erubiel Durazo would have an RBI single to send the game into extra innings. Then in the 12th Ramon Hernandez would lay down a two out walk off bunt scoring Eric Chavez. This is Oakland’s ninth consecutive postseason win over the Red Sox. They swept Boston in the ALCS in 1988 and 1990, breaking the record set by the Yankees over the Cubs in the 1932 and 1938 World Series. The mark would later be broken by 2008 Red Sox over the Angles. The Angles lead the Series 1 – 0.     2005: With an 8 – 4 win over their bitter rivals, Boston Red Sox; the Yankees clinch their eighth straight American League East title. The Red Sox could still tie New York with a win on Sunday; the Yankees have the tie breaker due to them winning the season series. Both the Red Sox and Yankees set a new home attendance record this season, with Boston passing the three million mark at Fenway Park for the first time.       2006: Rookie pitcher Devern Hansack pitches five hitless innings for a rain shortened win over the Orioles for his first win. In only his second Major League Hansack becomes the ninth American League pitcher to allow no hits in a complete game of fewer than nine innings. Due to a 1991 MLB ruling this is not counted as an “Official No- Hitter”.

2008: Once again the Red Sox and Angles battle in the American League Divisional Series, with Boston continuing there dominance when Jason Bay hits a two run home off John Lackey and John Lester only giving up an unearned run in seven innings. With a 4 – 1 win the Red Sox lead the Series 1 – 0.
