August 7 1887: Former Red Sox relief pitcher Chet Linwood Nourse is born in Ipswich, Massachusetts. In his three game career, he posted a 7.20 ERA in five innings of work.   1899: Former Red Sox pitcher (1924-1927) Frederick Davis “Ted” Wingfield is born in Bedford, Virginia. 1901:During the fist game of a double header Baltimore the Americans (Red Sox) pull off a triple play on their way to a 10-5 win over the Orioles (Yankees). In Game two the O’s are on the winning side with a 10-4 win. 1902: For the second time this season, Cy Young is shelled for six runs in the first inning and is pulled from the game. The Browns (Orioles) get the easy 12-4 win in St. Louis. Young will complete 41 of his 43 starts this season. 1915: Smoky Joe Wood fires a one hitter in a 2-0 shut out of Cleveland. The only hit is a single by Bill Wambsganss. 1916: In the third inning of Chicago’s 7-1 win over pitcher Reb Russell steal home. 1945: Former Red Sox left fielder (1924-1925) Robert Hays “Bobby” Veach passes away at the age of 57 in Detroit, Michigan. 1951: A suffering a severe sacroiliac pain, future Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr retires after playing second base for 13 seasons. Doerr would become a coach for the Sox. 1951: Senator Edwin C. Johnson (D) of Colorado backs the reserve clause. In his testimony he cites his own bill to exempt baseball for antitrust laws. 1956: Boston fines Ted Williams $5,000 for spitting at Red Sox fans. In the game the Sox beat the Yanks in 11 innings when Williams is issued a bases loaded walk. It is third spitting incident in as many weeks. The first incident started when before a record crowd for night games of 36,350 fans started to boo “The Kid” miss played a wind blown fly of Mickey Mantle’s bat in the top of the 11th. Williams was not the only fielder to have problems with the fans that night. Jackie Jensen had to be restrained by teammates from going into the stands after a heckler. This also was not Jensen’s first problem with the fans, the previous year he challenged a fan to a fight on the field. 1962: Former Red Sox relief pitcher (1988) John Howard Trautwein is born in Lafayette, Pennsylvania.  The only notable thing to happen in has brief Major League career was being on of the first victims of “Rule 5”.  He was purchased by the Expos (Nationals) from the Pioneer League’s Helena Brewers. Then he was obtained by Boston from Montreal in the Rule 5 draft but was return to the Expos in 1999, only to return to the Red Sox hours later for Minor League Player.   1970: Former Red Sox relief pitcher (2000) Richard Steven “Rick” Croushore is born in Lakehurst, New Jersey.   1970: Former Red Sox first baseman Gregory Daniel “Greg” Pirkl is born in Long Beach, California.   1972: Former Red Sox relief pitcher (1996-1997) Kerry Adreen Lacy Chattanooga, Tennessee.  In his two seasons he would post a 3-1 record with a 5.59 ERA and three saves in 44 appearances with 27 strikeouts, 15 games finished and 56 1/3 innings of work. 1975: Former Red Sox shortstop (2005) Edgar Enrique Rentería is born in Barranquilla, Colombia. 1977: The Sox beat the A’s 5-2, in Oakland to win their 9th straight road win, and the 10th win in a row over all. 1984: Bill Buckner and Tony Armas each hit a grand slam in the first two innings of Detroit’s Jack Morris, in a 12-7 victory. 1982: Using seats he had gotten through a friend from Executive Vice President Haywood Sullivan Tom Keane, of Greenland, New Hampshire takes his two kids Jonathan (age 4) and Mathew (age 2) to FenwayPark. The seats where in the second row of section 29, right next to the Red Sox dugout. Keane remembering the seats would say “It was a seat that everybody would dream of when they had little kids and you wanted to get then close to the action. It was just ideal.” But his field of dreams would soon become every parent’s worst nightmare. In the fourth inning Jonathan’s favorite player, Dave Stapleton steps into the batters box to face the White Sox’ Richard Dobson. Stapleton would take a late swing and send the ball speeding into the stands. Keane did not see where the ball went, but heard the loud cracking sound. He thought the ball had hit the concrete wall of the dugout, till he heard the cries of his baby boy. When he turn he could see the blood pouring from Jonathan’s face.         Red Sox slugger Jim Rice was standing at the top of the dugout steps so he could not see what happened but he could he the loud hear cracking noise and the crowds gasps. After Rice had seen what happened he IMMEDIATELY leaped into action. In a 2recent interview with ESPN, Rice would recall that he covered the dozen or so steps in less then ten seconds. As a father of two, Rice, thought about his own kids. He would tell ESPN “Just someone, myself, just taking care of my child, picking my child up and taking him into the clubhouse”.       When Rice got the Boston’s clubhouse he was met by Dr. Arthur Papas, the Red Sox team physician. In the same article with ESPN Dr. Papas said “There was blood on his face, his head, there was blood coming from his nose and his mouth, so these all indicative of a significant head injury.” A waiting ambulance would take Jonathan, one the one mile journey to near by Children’s Hospital.  With his skull fractured and having lost a lot of blood, he would under go a delicate surgery. During his five day stay Jonathan would receive visits from Stapleton and White Sox Manager Tony La Russa. Rice is credited with saving the young boys life. 1985: Commissioner Peter Ueberroth announces a tentative agreement to end the two day players strike. Play will resume tomorrow. 1988: Bruce Hurst throws a complete-game, extra-inning 3-0 shutout over Detroit. 1989: Greg Harris is selected off the wavier wire from the Phillies. 1992: Jack Clark files for Chapter 11 protection listing his debts at 11,459,305.97 and his assets only total 4,781,780. Clark is in the middle of a 3 year contract worth $8,700.000.00. Among his listed assets are 18 cars. 1999: Now playing for the Devil Rays, former Red Sox third baseman Wade Boggs hits a home run for the 3,000 hit of his Hall of Fame Career. He is the first player to have a home run, be his 3,000 hit.   2002: After years of refusals and rewriting of the record books Major League Baseball’s Players Union finally agrees to mandatory drug testing of illegal steroids starting in 2003. The results of the testing in 2003 was supposed to be keep secret, but in the intervening years names have been slowly leak out. Among the names are Boston’s own Manny Ramírez and David Ortiz.   2003: Former Red Sox pitcher Maurice Joseph “Mickey” McDermott Jr. (1948-1953) passes away in Phoenix, Arizona.
