 August 6 1903: Philadelphia out last the visiting “American” 4-3 in eight innings with the game called do to “dark clouds”. Mangers Jimmy Collins tries to protest the loss, but is unsuccessful.   1906: At Cleveland’s League Park, four the fourth game in a row Boston is shut out 4-0. After being shut out by the White Sox (3 - 0, 4 - 0 and 1 - 0) the past three days a new American League record is established. 1912: At Cleveland, Smoky Joe Wood gives up 13 hits while striking out five batters in 11 innings of work to win the game 5 - 4 and extending his record to 23 - 4. 1916: In a 3 – 0 shut out of the Browns (Orioles), Rube Foster only gives up three hits. 1917: One year to the day he shut out St. Louis Foster blanks the Indians 2-0. The only hit is a double by Joe Harris. 1919: Former Red Sox outfielder (1943-1947) Dilbert Leon Culberson is born in Halls, Georgia. 1939: The Tiger took the first game of today’s doubleheader 10-1. In the ninth inning first baseman Jimmie Foxx would be sent to the mound. He would retire all three batters, including one by strikeout. The Red Sox would take the nitecap 8 – 3. 1941: Former Red Sox pitcher (1968-1973) Raymond Leonard “Ray” Culp is born in Elgin, Texas. 1941: The Red Sox and Yankees split a midweek double header with Boston taking the first game 6 – 3 and New York taking the latter 3-1. Pete Fox has a pair of hits in both games. In the last five games he has hit two triples, six doubles and six singles. 1942: The “Sporting News” publishes an editorial supporting segregation in baseball. In part the author states that members of each race “prefer to draw their talents from their own ranks and both groups know their crowd psychology and do not care to run the risk of damaging their own game. 1950: In the lid lifter of today’s double header Ellis “Old folks” Kinder hits the only home run of his career, a walk off grand slam off White Sox ace Billy Pierce He has six RBIs in the game. Kinder also end’s Chicago rookie Chico Carrasquel’s 24 game hitting streak. The Red Sox also take the night game 4 - 3. 1953: Captain Ted Williams USMC, returns to the Red Sox line up after serving as an F-9 Jet Pilot in the Korean War. He will finish the season with 13 HR and .407 batting average. 1966: Former Red Sox relief pitcher (1995-1996) Stanley Peter “Stan” Belinda is born in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. 1967: For the first five innings of today’s game against the Red Sox the Twins Dean Chance is pitching a perfect game, until the game is called. The final score is 2-0. 1969: Former Red Sox Left Fielder Kevin Darnell Mitchell is born in San Diego, California. 1984: Detroit and Boston split a double header, with the Tigers taking the first game 9-7, and the Sox netting the night cap 10-2 giving Roger Clemens his sixith win of the season. Second baseman Marty Barrett has four hits in first game, while Wade Boggs has four hits including two homers in game two. 1986: After jumping on Floyd Bannister for seven runs in the first two innings the Red Sox cruise to an easy 9-0 win over the White Sox. This is Bannister’s 11th loss in a row to Boston, a streak that dates back to 1982. 1989: The Red Sox celebrate Carl Yastrzemski day at Fenway Park. In a pregame ceremony his number eight is place high above right field. The Sox keep the party going with a 6 – 4 win over Cleveland. 1998: The Red Sox purchase pitcher Pete Schourek from the Astros. 2001: The Hall of Fame announces changes to its voting procedure eliminating the closed door Veterans Committee held since 1953. The rule changes also make it easier for Negro League and pre-1900 players to be enshrined. Another rule change will make it harder for players not voted in by the writers to be enshrined. 2001: Defeating the Rangers 10-7, Red Sox catcher Scott Hatteberg hits into a triple play in the 4th. Then in his next at bat in the 6th the does the exact opposite he hits a Grand Slam. The Sox win the game 10-7. 2002: In a 9 – 1 win over the Red Sox, Oakland’s Miguel Tejada’s has his 24 game hitting streak come to an end. 2004: Boston acquires pitcher Mike Myers of waivers from Seattle.
