1916: Boston stops the Browns 14 game winning streak 4-1.

1927: Ira Flagstead has two triples in a 4-1 win over the White Sox at Fenway Park. For the third time this season a Chicago catcher has to leave a game with finger injuries. With a Broken finger Harry McCurdy joins fellow backstops Buck Crouse and Artie Schacht on the bench with injured digits.
1935: In a rain-drenched game with New York, “The Iron Horse” Lou Gehrig leaves the game do to a lumbago attack. The teams engage in stalling and hurry-up tactics. American League President John Heydler fines Yankees manager Joe McCarthy and Red Sox Manager Joe Cronin $100.
1947: Former Red Sox outfielder Bernardo “Bernie” Carbo (1974-1976, 1979-1980) is born in Detroit, Michigan.
1953: Ben Flowers shuts out the Browns, 5-0 in his first ever Major League Start.
1958: Former outfielder Red Sox Thomas Reid Nichols (1980-1985) is born in Ocala, Florida.
1964: After weeks of negotiating Commissioner Ford C. Frick announces he will not run for another term.
1967: In a 2-1 loss to the Twins in Minnesota Elston Howard makes his Red Sox debut.
1968: Former Red Sox first baseman John Garrett Olerud (2005) is born in Seattle, Washington. Olerud is perhaps best known for hearing his batting helmet while fielding.
1972: Former Red Sox pitcher John Truman Wasdin (1997-2000) is born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. During his time in Boston Wasdin earned the nickname “Way Back” Wasdin from the Fenway Faithful for the way he would give up untimely late inning home runs.
1975: Roger Moret is scheduled to start in tonight game when he gets in to a car crash while driving in Connecticut. He’s okay and starts the game anyway, but the Red Sox lose the game to the Orioles.
1976: Former Red Sox Outfielder (2007) Robert Michael “Bobby” Kielty is born in Fontana, California. Kielty was signed to a Minor League deal on August 6th 2007, and was called up on August 18th after Willy Mo Peña was traded to the Nationals just in time to join Boston’s roster for the playoffs. His only at bat in the World Series was a pinch hit home run in Game Four. As it turn out it was the Series deciding run.
1977: Amateur Free Agent Rich Gedman is signed.
1977: Former Red Sox fielder (2006-2007) Eric Scott Hinske is born Menasha, Wisconsin. Boston picked up Hinske on August 17th 2006 from the Blue Jays for a Minor League player and cash consideration. Being a highly versatile player he added depth to a depleted Red Sox roster. After helping the Sox to the 2007 World Series he would sign a Minor League deal with the Rays and would be added to their roster before Game 4 of the 2008 World Series. Then in a trade deadline deal the Pirates sent him to the Yankees. Only time will tell if he completes his tour of the American League East with a stop in Baltimore.
1979: Boston crushes the Brewers in both games of a double header (7-2 19-5). In the night cap, the Red Sox get 27 hits and are the first team in 30 years to score in eight of the nine innings, with the forth being the only frame with a goose egg.
1997: The Bo Sox get 24 hits including four homers thrashing the Rangers 17-1. Troy O’Leary hit two upper deck home runs.
2003: Major League Baseball announces plans to build its first owned and operated YouthBaseballAcademy on the campus of Compton Community College. This is part of Baseball’s Urban Youth Initiative.
2003: David McCarty is sign of waivers from Oakland.
