1914: At Cleveland’s League Park, Boston’s ace Dutch Leonard shuts out the Indians 3-0. Former Red Sox centerfielder Tris Speaker has a single and a triple. Speaker would also register eight put outs on his way to a record 424 this season.
1931: The Tigers’ Tommy Bridges strikes out the side in the bottom of the first inning, but would collapses in the fourth inning in an eventual 13-4 loss to Boston.
1935: In the first game of a double header in Shibe Park, Lefty Grove hits a grand slam, but still loses to the Athletics 7-6. In the nitecap Wes Ferrell shuts out the A’s 2-0.
1939: Dispite a vote of disapproval from Red Sox Owner Tom Yawkey, AAA Louisville shortstop Pee Wee Reese is sold to the Dodgers for $75,000 and four players to be named later.
1946: Rudy York’s bat today is hotter then a two dollar pistol as he becomes only the third Major Leaguer, second Red Sox, to hit two grand slams in today’s 13-6 win over St. Louis. He also has a two run double to push his RBI total to 10. The only other players to have two grand slams are the Yankees’ Tony Lazzeri (1936) and Boston’s Jim Tabor (1939).
1947: In the first of two games today Jake Jones hits a 60 foot triple in the Red Sox 4-3 win at Fenway Park. Jones is award the trey by Umpire Cal Hubbard when St. Louis pitcher Fred Sanford throws his glove at the ball in an effort to keep it foul. Boston also takes the second game 11-2.
1948: A night game record of 54,609 Tigers’ fans watch as the Red Sox’ Ellis Kinder has an 8-0 shut out win over Detroit. Boston’s win streak now stands at 13 in a row.
1962: In the second game of a double header Red Sox starting pitcher Galen Cisco was in Manager Pinky Higgins’ dog out so he is left in the game while the Senators (Rangers) continued to score run after run. He if finally lifted five and one third innings later the damage was done and Washington cruses to an easy 14-1 win. The first game was also a blow out as the Sens win 11-2.
1965: The Athletics win both games at Fenway today 7-3, and 10-8. In the losses Tony Conigliaro has two home runs in the first game and a grand slam in the second.
1969: The Pilots (Brewers) and Red Sox battle for 19 innings at Sick’s to a 3-3 tie. In the top of the 20th inning Joe Lahoud would hit a two run homer to give Boston the 5-3 win.
1975: Former Red Sox third baseman Shea Mathew Hillenbrand (2001-2003) is born in Mesa, Arizona. Hillenbrand was drafted by Boston in the 10th round of the 1995 Amateur Draft, and would make his Red Sox debut on April 2nd, 2001. He would earn the nickname “Everyday Shea” when he got a hit in his first nine games, and 18 of his first 19.
1975: With Yankees Stadium getting a face lift, today’s twinbill with Boston is played at Shea Stadium. In the first game centerfielder Freddy Lynn has a spectacular running catch in Bill Lee’s 1-0 win. In the night game Roger Moret also shuts out the Stripes by a score of 6-0. The losses are the first nails in the coffin that is the Yankees pennant hopes.
1976: Ferguson Jenkins wins his 200th game with a 8-7 win over the Indians.
2000: Second Baseman Jeff Frye and pitchers Brian Rose and John Wasdinas are sent to the Rockies for pitchers Rolando Arrojo and Rick Croushore, infielder Mike Lansing and an undisclosed amount of cash.
