1910: Former Red Sox pitcher (1936-1937) James Francis “Jim” Henry is born in Danville, Virginia.
1918: In a 3-1 loss to the Yankees, Babe Ruth injuries his wrist sliding into second. He will re-injure his wrist tomorrow in a similar play.
1927: In Washington DC, the Senators (Twins) win their third game in a row over the Boston. In the 8-7 win all of Washington’s runs come in the 4th inning. Buddy Myers belts a home run off of his form teammate, Walter Johnson.
1941: Bob Feller wins his 16th game of the year by beating the Red Sox 11-8.
1960: In an effort to speed up the selection process, the Hall of Fame alters its voting process. Under the new rules the Special Veterans Committee will vote annually, rather then ever other year, and can induct up to two players per year. Also the Baseball Writers Association of America is authorized to hold a runoff election of the top 30 vote getters if no one is elected in the first ballot.
1961: Backup outfielder Rip Repulski’s is released by Boston ending his Major League career.
1962: Earl Wilson has his first career shut out, a no hitter, of the Angles. In the 2-0 win the righty also hits a home run.
1968: The Major League Executive Council decides that both the American and National League will play a 162 game season starting in 1969 and will have two six team divisions.
1969: Former Red Sox pitcher (2004-2005) Michael Stanley "Mike" Myers is born in Arlington Hills, Illinois. The “submarine” pitcher was a part of the 2004 World Series Championship team.
1970: John Kennedy is acquired from the Brewers.
1971: Former Red Sox outfielder (1993-1994) Gregory Brent “Greg” Blosser is born in Manatee, Florida.
1977: Avenging their three loses last week; the Yankees complete a three game sweep of the Red Sox. The Stripes take a 4-1 lead into the ninth inning only to have the Sox tie the score. In the home half of the inning Paul Blair bounces single over the head of Butch Hobson with the bases loaded to win 5-4.
1987: Not only does Wade Boggs 25 consecutive game hitting streak come to and end, but Roger Clemens does not hang on to a 9-0 second inning lead. Boston losses to New York 12-11 in 10 innings, the nine run comeback ties a Yankees team record. Sadly, the Red Sox have blown larger leads in the past.
1989: Jeff Stone is purchased from the Rangers.
1997: In the Tiger 10-6 shellacking of the BoSox, Detroit’s Brian Hunter steals four bases.
1999: The Red Sox score 11 runs in the first inning en rout to a 17-1 win over the White Sox. Brian Daubach and Nomar Garciaparra each have a first inning homer, with Garciaparra adding a second one in the third inning. Mike Stanley and Jason Varitek also home for the Crimson Hoes.
2002: Brad Baker and Dan Giese are sent to the Padres for Alan Embree and Andy Shibilo.
2005: Boston beats the Philadelphia 12-8, for their 7th win in a row. Manny Ramirez belts a grand slam, the 19th of his career tying Eddie Murray on the all time list.
2006: Kevin Youkilis ties the game at 7-7 with a base hit, then for the second game in a row (Yesterday’s game was rain out) David Ortiz hits a walk off single to win the game in the 12th inning. The ball rolls all the way to the wall in left center.
