1884: Former Red Sox catcher (1906) Robert Andrew “Bob” Peterson is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1912: Smokey Joe Wood beats the White Sox in Chicago 6-4. He only gives up five hits while improving his record to 13-3.

1914: Former Red Sox pitcher (1949) John Carl “Johnnie” Wittig is born in Baltimore, Maryland.

1917: With the White Sox up 2-0 in the fifth inning a light mist starts to fall, which causes the Red Sox to start to stall. Then a “horde of fans” comes out of Fenway’s right field bleachers, a place “where the gambling crowd is allowed to operate freely.” The rabble tries to prevent the Sox from batting and make the game official. With only five policemen at the stadium the umpires are unable to clear the field. The White Sox players must force their way to their dugout, on there Buck Weaver is hit by a pop bottle. Some fans accuse Weaver and Frank McMullen of having slugged them, and ask the Chief Officer to swear out warrants for their arrests.

Umpire McCormick refuses to forfeit the game and has two mounted policemen come on to the field when the players return. Harry Frazze declines remove the canvas covering the mound until the ump “pulled his watch.” Sawdust would be spread on the wet infield and play would resume 45 minutes later. Chicago would win the game 7-2.

1918: The Browns (Orioles) edge past the Red Sox, 2-1, with Babe Ruth going 0-1. He was intentionally walked his last three times at bat.

1926: Bill Regan hits two homers in the fourth inning in the Red Sox 10-5 win over Chicago. He would only hit two homers all of last season.

1936: Jimmie Foxx belts a pair of home runs including one that clears the left field roof of Comiskey and travels a block before landing on 35th Street. The ball travels an estimated 600 feet, and Foxx will later say this is the longest home run ever hit. Dispite the moon shoot, the Red Sox loose 4-2.

1938: At Sportsman’s park the Browns walk Jimmie Foxx an American League record six times in a nine inning game. Boston wins today’s contest 12-8.
1940: In the 12th inning of the first game of a doule header with the White Sox, Ted Williams would hit a game winning homer to give Boston the 4-3 win. He would also homer in the 14-5 win in the nitecap. Joe Cronin would also homer.

1945: After starting his career with eight wins, four by shut out. Dave "Boo" Ferriss loses to the Yankees 3-2.

1948: Teddy Ballgame has a single, two doubles, and a homer to boost his average to .408 and lead Boston to a 7-5 win over the Indians.

1957: In Cleveland’s 6-0 loss to Boston, Roger Maris is hit in the eye in the ninth inning by a “return throw” by Sammy White.

1962: Former Red Sox pitcher (1986-1987) Calvin Drew Schiraldi is born in Houston, Texas. Schiraldi probably best remembered for being the losing pitcher in Game 6 and 7 of the 1986 World Series.

1963: The BoSox sweep both games of a double header 8-1 and 12-5. Roman Mejias hit three homers in the two games, while Carl Yastrzemski scores 5 runs in the second game.

1976: Former Red Sox catcher (1935-1936) George Willard Dickey passes away in Dewitt, Arkansas at the age of 60. The switch hitting back up backstop is the younger brother of Hall of Famer Bill Dickey. After his time in Boston Dickey would serve in the United States Navy in World War II.

1978: Bill Lee started his day with a cooking demonstration at a department store in Boston, and ended with him storming out of the Red Sox clubhouse saying he is retiring. The Spaceman has had arm problems that in part led to the Red Sox allowing 10 unearned runs in his last two starts. Also Lee is upset that his friend Bernie Carbo was sold yesterday, saying “Today just cost us the pennant”. His walkout only lasts on day.

1978: Carlton Fisk has two doubles, his fourth multi-hit game in a row as the Boston top Seattle 6-3.

1979: Yaz picks up his 1,000th extra base hit, while Rick Burleson has an inside-the-park home run in an 11-5 win over the Pale Hoes.

1994: Dave Valle is sent to the Brewers for Tom Brunansky.

1997: Troy O’Leary has a walk off single in the 10th inning to give the Red Sox the 7-6 win over the Phillies.

2002: Derek Lowe strikes out 10 Braves batters en route to a 6-1 win.
