Steven Drew? Butchie says - Sure it’s a great cover story for the real problem
In yet another mundane move by Boston’s mundane GM, Ben Cherington has inked SS Steven Drew to a one year deal. Thus allowing the Drew family to continue its tradition of stealing from Red Sox Nation. $9.5 million - oh - and little Steven gets a half million bump if he makes a plate appearance clause -- Ten MILLION . This is desperation people. This is what the Red Sox have come to. Overpaying for a career .265 hitter. But I really don’t need to bash Ben on this - do I? Because that isn’t the real story.
The real story here is a 2.06 million dollar a year player, whose place he is holding because he is still not ready for prime time. Yes, Jose Iglesias will spend another year at AAA collecting on what is now the last remnant of the Theo-the-Ego era. Some talk about Iglesias now being trade bait and his inclusion in bigger deals involving Lester or Ellsbury. PLEASE…
While this kids-glove work might be just this side of Ozzy Smith-kind of good, no one is going to pay more than SIX Million over the next three years for his glove, only to have him become arbitration eligible in 2015 at this high of a base. Not even Magic Johnson is that dumb. So, the real story here isn’t that we have to pay the Drew family ten million - it’s the fact this team has lost its way and can no longer identify talent when it sees it -- or when it isn’t there to begin with. So while we are overpaying for second teir free agents while Benny restocks the farm system and John Henry his pockets, can Red Sox Nation be sure that two, three, or four years from now it will be any better?
