Butchie Says: Time for CC to Shine
We all saw it, we all cringed, when Butchie saw Jacoby holding his shoulder he called it. “Eight weeks” I looked at him and he said we will see him on the 4th of July. And after looking at this morning’s paper it looks like he was pretty close to dead solid perfect. So until then what do we do?
We start collecting on that huge contract Theo shelled out to CC last year. Yes I know he is coming off surgery yes I know he had a bad year last year but Butchie and I both think CC can take the spotlight and become the player we all hoped for. There is now no reason not to hand Carl the spot at the top of the order he covets, there is no worrying about left right lineup configurations there is no looking over his shoulder because there is someone who fits in better.
I posed the question at the beginning of the spring can you do it again Jacoby? It wasn’t just a question of his talent it was also a question of durability something over his short career Jacoby has not been. Beyond that there is the huge jump he took statistically last year especially in HR production I had a hard time buying that Ellsbury would match last seasons thirty two round trippers. Take away the twenty plus homers over his career averages he is also looking rather ordinary in the RBI department. My point is while we we’re all as a Nation hopeful that Ellsbury would put up stats close to last seasons there was no guarantee of seeing a line even approaching 321/32/105 with an OBP SLG and OPS line of 376 / 552 / 928. Ellsbury actually touched 364 bases last season. Do all that again? I wouldn’t bet on it. Something much closer to his career stats would be more likely.
Now let’s see what Butchie sees waiting in the wings. A classic top of the order player with a ten year sample line to look at. Even with last years abysmal numbers his career line 293/14/77.. 333/441/773. Do these numbers alone make up for what Ellsbury did last season of course not but who is to say it was anything more than wishful thinking that Jacoby would have had another MVP caliber season.
It’s not all doom and gloom Nation. It isn’t fold up the tents time 3 weeks into this season. It isn’t some roll player or AAA prospect we have to put our hopes on here. Its an all star, and stars shine
