That seems to be the rational of the Baltimore Orioles. And that’s just the way Kevin Gregg pitched the ninth inning last night, only he was too inept to actually hit David Ortiz on three straight pitches that had obviously been sent at Big Papi’s knees. After a bit of a shouting match Ortiz popped up and to Gregg’s thinking didn’t run quite as fast down to first setting off the fireworks. After the game Gregg kept tossing fastballs at Papi and the Sox
“I think there’s some ethics to these game, guidelines you got to stay within,’’
"We are playing the game of baseball. You got to go ask David what he was thinking. Its 3-0 and you are up seven runs and the opposing pitcher gets upset with you hitting a weak fly ball and not running. If he thinks there’s something [wrong] with me saying that, than he’s got other things he needs to figure out in this game."
“I think we showed them we’re not backing down, we’re not scared of them, them and their $180 million payroll, we don’t care,’’ Gregg said
I’m sorry but when you talk about ethics in one breath you can’t bring up another mans salary or teams Payroll. Or you could at the very least get the payroll right. Maybe Ortiz could contemplate how to better handle getting thrown at and his hustle while he’s at the All Star game would that be sufficient Mr. Gregg? This entire incident could have been avoided had you actually had the skill set to hit Papi the first time you tried to.
The whining didn’t seem to stop there. Buck Showalter had this to add
"I’m not going to get into all of that, he said, she said, we said, all that stuff. It is what it is. It’s a game played by passionate men who care about what they are doing. We’re kind of wounded right now. I’m sure he took some exception to him swinging 3-0 there, and I’m sure he took exception to him pitching in. It’s part of the game. There are a lot of things that led up to that that some people probably didn’t notice. But we did."
No Buck we all noticed the ass whipping you were being handed, maybe you and your team are a tad bit sensitive. Was it Ortiz watching his shot in the first inning ? Or Youk arguing about called strikes? Yea we all saw the look on your face, at least Butchie and I did. Maybe if your team had a little swagger and took the umps to task once and a while you would get a call or two or how about this try sending a message to an opponent BEFORE the game is out of reach, and you wouldn’t be in last place. Again.
The bottom line is this. The sox win and you “Buck” and Gregg come off looking like a bunch of babies and poor losers. Suck it up pitch better score more runs.
