Teams are right around 60 games right now or a little bit more so with 100 game left and the mid summer classic fast approaching I wanted to take a look at who is having all star worthy seasons.
AL/NL
C - A.J. Pierzynski (White Sox)/Yadier Molina (Cardinals)
Pierzynski is having a very good season coming in with 11 homeruns, 40 rbi and a .297 batting average. The homeruns and and RBI are ranked first among major league catchers. He also leads the majors with a .528 slugging percentage.
Molina is really among the most consistent catchers in major league baseball. If will never wow you with his stats but each and every year he always has a solid batting average and contributes in all areas of the game. Molina leads all eligible catchers with a .329 batting average. He has 8 homeruns, 32 RBI and has also stole 5 bases. He is a above average defensive catcher and is donig a great job with the Cardinals pitching staff who has been without it's ace Chris Carpenter
1B - Paul Konerko (White Sox)/Joey Votto (Reds)
Konerko seems to have found the fountain of you as he is once again have a stellar season. He leads all AL first basemen with 12 homeruns and a league leading .373 batting average. His 75 hits lead all major league first baseman
Votto is once again off to a great start. Votto is 1 hit behind Konerko for most hits among first baseman and has 11 homeruns to go along with 41 RBI. His 26 doubles are 10 more than the next closes NL first baseman.
2B - Jason Kipinis (Indians)/Dan Uggla (Braves)
It is tough to beat out Robinson Cano but the season Kipinis is having deserves recognition. Kipinis with his 10 homeruns is 2nd among 2B and his 40 RBI leads AL 2B. He also has 15 stolen bases and a .284 batting average. He has been one of the surprises of the first half.
Dan Uggla is having a good bounce back season improving his batting average 30 plus points from last season. He leads all 2B with 41 RBI and the homerun stroke looks to have picked up where it left off last year.
3B - Miguel Cabrera (Tigers)/David Freese (Cardinals)
Cabrera has handled the transition across the diamond very well. His 13 homeruns and 51 RBI lead all major league 3B and he is 2nd behind David Wright with a .316 batting average.
Last years World Series MVP is having a great season at third base. Freese comes in with 12 homers, 40 RBI and a .271 batting average. He battled a little bit of an injury and missed some games but has not had any rust or ill effects from that.
SS - Derek Jeter (Yankees)/Sterlin Castro (Cubs)
Shortstop isn't a strong suit across the big leagues but Jeter is having a very solid season. Jeter leads all major league shortstops with a .318 batting average. His power numbers aren't quit there (6 homers, 20 RBI) but his 34 runs is third in the AL for shortstops.
Sterlin Castro is having a fine season for the Cubs. He is on pace to set career highs in homeruns, RBI, and stolen bases. He is a threat on the bases with 16 steals and is one of the few bright spots for the Cubs this season.
OF - Josh Hamilton (Rangers), Jose Bautista (Blue Jays) Adam Jones (Oriioles)/Carlos Beltran (Cardinals), Carlos Gonzalez (Rockies), Andrew McCutchen (Pirates)
Outfiled is always a hard position to pick because there is so much talent to just pick three. Hamilton is an obvious choice as head leads the majors in homeruns (22), RBI (62), and slugging percentage (.684). He also has a very good .335 batting average plus who can forget the memorable 4 homerun game against the Orioles. Jose Bautista is hitting with power once again with 19 homeruns and 47 RBI. The batting average is a little low at .236 but he is hard to leave off the team. Adam Jones is having a terrific season as are the Orioles so he should be rewarded for it. Jones comes in with 18 homers, 39 RBI and .309 batting average. He has also stolen 9 bases and is in the top 5 of all major league outfielders with 44 runs.
The outfield in the NL is absolutely loaded. I had to leave off guys like Ryan Braun, Michael Bourn and Giancarlo Stanton. Carlos Beltran is off to a great start to the season with a .289 batting average, 18 homers and 46 RBI. Carlos Gonzalez started off slow but really came around in May. 16 homeruns, 48 RBI and .323 batting average is good for top 3 in the National League among outfielders. He also has 14 doubles and 9 stolen bases. McCutchen is doing everything for a surprsingly hot Pirates team. 11 homers, 37 RBI, .324 batting average, 12 stolen bases, 10 doubles, 3 triples and 33 runs is very impressive.
DH - David Ortiz (Red Sox)/Ryan Braun (Brewers)
Ortiz is the obvious choice at DH for the AL. He is having another great season. 15 homeruns, 39 RBI and a .304 batting average is a very good season.
I went with Braun at the NL DH. He is having a worthy season as an outfielder but I had 3 better candidates. Braun has 15 homers, 40 RBI, 11 stolen bases, 10 doubles and a .310 batting average.
P - Chris Sale (White Sox)/R.A. Dickey (Mets)
Incredible to think that these two starting pitchers would be my picks so far. Chris Sale has been a huge bright spot for the White Sox and has been pretty dominant when he takes the mound. An 8-2 record with a 2.05 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 76 strikeouts looks like a worthy resume to start the all star game. He is the AL leader in wins, ERA, and WHIP and ranks in the top ten in strikeouts. It is really hard to find anothe pitcher who has been as good as him.
R.A. Dickey is having a dream season and is worthy of the bid here. A 9-1 record to go with a 2.44 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 77 strikeouts has the knuckle ball pitcher in a career season. His 9 wins leads the majors and is also in the top 10 in the NL in ERA, WHIP and strikeouts.
There you have my all stars at this point in the season.
